An eventful story

Once upon a time, in 1989, 25 brave forwarders had a daring idea: build a national parcel service provider in the geographic centre of Germany. German Parcel was born, to be the starting point of the unprecedented story of the GLS Group.

German Parcel started its operation with 30 depots in the Western part of Germany and its national hub in Neuenstein. By the end of 1989, 2 million parcels were transported within Germany.

Today, GLS Germany is the largest GLS market by revenue and we are proud to be part of the most successful parcel networks.

1989

In order to connect the locations, circles of the equivalent of 400 km are drawn around the depots using a compass. The common point of intersection Neuenstein: the hub.

1990 - 1998

With reunification, the parcel network is being rebuilt, processes are standardised and industrialised. Delivery to private recipients starts in 1995 and the first ParcelShops in 1997.

1999

Royal Mail becomes a new shareholder, German Parcel is transferred to the newly founded General Logistics Systems B.V. (GLS). With DER KURIER, the company enters the express market.

2000 - 2009

German Parcel becomes GLS Germany. Introduction of a Europe-wide branding. GLS IT Services starts. ThinkGreen initiative to strengthen Europe-wide environmental protection activities.

2010 - 2019

Introduction of PharmaService and FlexDeliveryService. Private customer portal GLS-ONE launched. Start of GLS KlimaProtect, ensuring climate-neutral delivery through compensation.

2020

During the coronavirus pandemic, GLS is fulfilling its supply-chain mandate. In doing so, the utmost is done to protect the health of all parties involved.

2021

New look, same passion: The GLS Group presents its brand in a new and fresh design.

2022

The sustainable EcoHub in Essen is the venue for the GLS Group's international environmental conference for the first time and will receive a 1,800 square metre green roof.
